At his sister's house, Pip is a boy without expectations. Mrs. Joe beats him and has nothing good to say about her little brother. Her husband Joe is a kind man, although he is a blacksmith without much ambition, and it's assumed that Pip will follow in his footsteps. Two encounters change Pip’s life. The first is with the escaped convict Magwitch who despite his terror he helps. Later at the home of Miss Havisham, a local recluse, Pip meets the beautiful Estella who he fears will see him as horribly common. Pip becomes dissatisfied with his life at the forge and longs to escape his working class life. Then, suddenly, Pip receives startling news: he has inherited a lot of money from an anonymous benefactor and must leave for London immediately, to become a gentleman. |
