In the American Smokey Mountains, John, the witch boy, approaches Conjur Man and tells him he will pay any amount and agree to any terms just so long as he can be turned into a human. It is only as a human that he can be with his mortal love, the beautiful Barbara Allen. When Conjur Man denies his request, John turns to Conjur Woman. She agrees, as long as he will marry Barbara Allen. If Barbara is faithful to him for a year, then John will remain a human. Having had his request granted, John runs off to join Barbara and the humans of Buck Creek. But the superstitious townspeople resent their happiness, and their meddling culminates in violence and tragedy. |
